Lalo Crane, aka Lalovibe, is a vibraphonist-composer-songwriter who loves to adventure with new sounds and unorthodox instrumentation. The sound of her newest record, Seeking Magic, is mallets + chamber orchestra, and the music is about reembracing hope in dark times. Fittingly, this album about emergence is Lalo’s reintroduction as a solo artist as well as her most ambitious release!
As always, Lalo uses mallet instruments as her base, but in Seeking Magic she expands her instrumental and stylistic palette to bring together the many eclectic styles that she’s explored over the years. Throughout this new music, one can hear jazz influences + lush but minimalist winds like Lalo used in her album Half Moon, playfulness and percussiveness reminiscent of Lalo’s Urban Myth, and the intensity and rock energy married with classical influences like in her album Lalo; in her newest work, she combines all of these with the skills she’s acquired from years of recording on film and commercial music as well as the production chops she’s honed from working on Freckleland tunes and songs for licensing. Lalo graduated from Berklee College of Music and toured throughout the U.S., Mexico, and Europe performing her original compositions to the accompaniment of rave reviews in numerous jazz, percussion, and other music publications for her playing, composing and recording. Jazziz listed Lalo among the top 20 fine vibists; Jazztimes, Downbeat, JazzWeek, the Village Voice, etc. have given kudos for her recordings; and NPR did a feature interview with her on their Weekend Edition Sunday. She has traveled to many colleges and universities throughout the U.S. as both a performer and clinician and often as an artist-in-residence, and she has been a featured performer for numerous jazz and percussion festivals. After a decade based in NYC, Lalo relocated to Los Angeles and began recording on ubiquitous commercials such as AT&T, Cheerios, and Lysol and films such as Insurgent, Don Jon and Shimmer Lake. Since 2013, Lalo has been songwriting, recording, and producing as half of the award-winning children’s music duo Freckleland with powerhouse singer-songwriter Kyler England. The duo has received a multitude of prominent songwriting awards, is featured in the Photo/Memories App, and they are featured creators in the YouTube Kids App with over 2 million views on YouTube. Lalo continues to explore combining sounds and styles in her LA studio. She endorses Vic Firth mallets and Alternate Mode, Inc. |
